KENYA'S CHIEF OF DEFENCE FORCES (CDF) FRANCIS OGOLLA, DIES !!

 

General Francis Ogolla died on Thursday 18th of April, 2024 in the afternoon after a Kenya Defence Forces helicopter crashed at the Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

General Francis Ogolla was named as the Chief of Defence Forces by President William Ruto in April, 2023 when he made ammendments in the military.

He had taken over from General Robert Kibochi who departed after retiring at the age of 62.

In a live address to the nation at the state house, the president William Ruto announced, "Today at 2.20 pm, our nation has suffered a tragic air accident at Sindar area, Kaben location, Tot division, in Elgeyo Marakwet County. I am deeply saddened to announce the death of General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces,"  In the crash, there were 11 other military personnel. Nine of the personnel in the plane died while two survived. The identified officers who died in the helicopter crash are; Brigadier Swale Saidi, Colonel Duncan Keittany, Lieutenant Colonel David Sawe, Major George Benson Magondu, Captain Sora Mohamed, Captain Hillary Litali, Senior Sergent John Kinyua Mureithi, Sergent Cliphonce Omondi, and Sergent Rose Nyawira

With this tragedy, the president has announced three days of national mourning which begins on April 19, in honour of General Ogolla and his nine colleagues who died in the crash.

President Ruto has instructed that during this period flags will fly at half mast.

In his speech, he also said, "This is a moment of great sadness for myself, as the Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, the Kenya Defence Forces fraternity and the nation of Kenya. We have lost our most valiant generals and gallant officers," Before his appointment to the chief of defence, General Ogolla was the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces. Ogolla was a graduate of ÉcoleMilitaire de Paris and the National Defence College of Kenya.

President Ruto has appointed Major General Charles Muriu Kahariri to the rank of Lieutenant General and is now serving as the new Vice Chief of Defence Forces.
